We are sorry to report the death on 5 November of Fr Ian Ker, former Roman Catholic parish priest of Burford. Fr Ker, a former Anglican, was ordained into the Catholic priesthood in 1979. He held an MA from Oxford and a Ph.D from Cambridge.He taught English Literature and theology at universities in the UK and USA and was the author or editor of more than 20 books, some 16 of which were about John Henry Newman. He was the world's leading authority on Newman and his work included John Henry Newman: A Biography (2019) which is regarded as the definitive book on that subject. He also wrote a biography of G.K Chesterton (2012). He was a senior research fellow at Blackfriars Hall in Oxford and in his later years combined his work as parish priest at the Church of SS Thomas More and John Fisher with his academic pursuits. His funeral took place in Burford on 29 November.
