It appears that Halfpenny Bridge over the Thames at Lechlade will remain closed until possibly 20 September following damage incurred when it was struck by a vehicle. It is a listed structure so repairs have to be carried out in a way approved by the heritage bodies concerned. The closure will cover the period of the Fairford air tattoo around 14 July and will also affect visitors to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden who approach it from the south. Businesses in Lechlade are also concerned.
The official diversion route is via Cirencester but we understand that some drivers are using the nearby St John' Bridge, not pleasing the residents of the normally quiet village of Buscot Wick. At least the repairs seem to be proceeding more quickly than those to Burford Bridge.
