No doubt to the relief of thirsty residents, a local watering hole will soon be open again. Note that it is now just called Highway, like its sister establishment Bull down the road. (Definite articles are clearly becoming an endangered species). We had a sneak preview with Adam Painter, who designed the interior together with his wife Ellen. They are also the team behind Bull and similar themes have been carried through with soft linens and lighting. There is a 30 seat tapas restaurant which is designed to be cosy, informal and convivial and a private dining room for up to ten people. Tapas was chosen as it is a type of food not otherwise available in the area. One of the attractive features is a new bar which will just be for those looking for a drink, not shared with diners, and will have a hatch for serving customers who sit outside in the street. In the winter there will be a roaring fire. The existing 11 bedrooms have been completely refitted without any structural alterations and plastered with tadelakt*.
Rebecca Riley, the previous manager of the Highway and now general manager of both Highway and Bull, told us: “We are thrilled to announce that The Highway Inn’s doors are back open, and we can’t wait to welcome our cherished local customers into the newly refurbished space. While we’ve given the place a fresh new look, we’ve made sure the wonderful team remains the same and it still feels like home. Enjoy catching up at our stunning new bar and savour the exciting new tapas-style dishes in our restaurant. Thank you all for your patience during our renovation—we can't wait to see you again!”
