Following on from the enormous success of D-Day 80 - 6th June 2024, when the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, was commemorated by the lighting of over one thousand beacons and five hundred lamp lights of peace throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK overseas territories, plans are now in hand for the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of VE Day which marked the end of the war in Europe and the Second World War as a whole on 8th May 1945, in a similar way.
The organisers are encouraging communities across the country to light beacons and lights of peace at 9.30pm that evening and to hold parties throughout the day in our streets, gardens, homes, gardens, churches, villages, town halls, pubs, clubs, hotels and just about any location you can think of.
Jennie Craven, deputy mayor of Burford, is co-ordinating what is happening in Burford and finding out what organisations, groups and individuals in Burford and the surrounding area are doing.
For example the FaB WI are holding an Afternoon Tea - VE Style at Burford Baptist Church with tea and a singer who will sing songs from the 1940s.
If you are planning an event, please could you contact Jennie via jennie.craven@burford-tc.gov.uk
Organisers are also being encouraged to register their events in advance on the national VE Day website www.veday80.org.uk. You will then receive a certificate and other information.
